Especially for children with special needs who are mentally retarded. Mental retardation is a term used to refer to children who have below-average intellectual abilities. For this reason, researchers want to know the interpersonal communication patterns of teachers with students with special needs who are mentally retarded and how to shape children's independence using social penetration theory. The research method uses a qualitative approach to know the communication patterns used

The results of this research illustrate that teachers can apply interpersonal communication when carrying out teaching activities for children with special needs. For this reason, penetration theory is the correct theory to help children form their independence.
