Abstract

Ideological and political conflicts were prominent in Tegal's history from the early years of
Indonesia Independence until the era of Guided Democracy (1959-1965). The clash between Islamism and
communism often created political tension. This study intends to describe the intensity of the conflict by
articulating the role and leadership of K.H. Muchlas (1886-1964), a prominent Islamic scholar in Tegal at
that time. Historical methods that rely on oral history with the political sociology approach are used to
analyze the themes and chronology of these various incidents, explain the root of the problems, and relate it
to broader events at the national level. The study found that the intensity of ideological conflicts in Tegal is
related to conflicts at the national level, but they are rooted in the community's character and the local social
system.
